it’s 7 pm on a saturday evening. i’m so bored. why did i never learn how to entertain myself as a child?

the past three weekends, i’ve had the urge to go to the movies. and of course, is there anything worth spending £8 on in the cinema? not a fucking thing.

books are putting me to sleep, television is a wasteland, i’ve been to all my favourite websites three times, all the shops are closed, and the house is spotlessly clean.

lordy, what the hell am i gonna do for the next three weeks?! someone save me from myself!

shocking

been on an reorganising kick today, and was shoving a bunch of lightbulbs back into the closet when my hand accidentally brushed against the loose end of a (what i now know to be live) wire.

zing! involuntary scream, hand sizzling, lightbulbs shattering everywhere.

j came running around the corner and i just burst into tears. i’ve never had a shock like that before – aside from the sickening jolt, it really scared me.

and here a half hour later, my hand still aching and three small burn marks in the shape of a triangle, like some sort of alien branding.

j suggested suing the landlord. luckily, i’m not quite *that* american.

it’d be funny if it wasn’t so scary

An investigation is under way after a Tube train entered a tunnel the wrong way, into the path of another train.

Hundreds of passengers were on each of the two Northern Line trains when the incident happened on Sunday.

The driver is believed to have slammed on the brakes when he saw the other train, which had stopped at a signal at Camden Town station.

yup – our tube service is first class. definitely worth the $8 ride roll

the downside of doing your own thing

so last evening, i idly clicked past my blog… only to suddenly have a *panic attack* as it no longer looked like my lovingly hand-crafted (lumps and all) bordello theme, but had somehow been switched over to the spare blue and white default wordpress theme. how that happened, i have no idea since *i* didn’t do it, and it’s not the sort of thing you can accidentally mess up. you have to be logged into the dashboard and click several different tabs in order to change themes.

luckily all the filage and assorted bloggery was still all in one place where it was supposed to be, and i managed to easily switch back, but i’m still baffled as to how it happened in the first place. i do make a habit of backing everything up… and it is only a blog after all. but still, it has me somewhat freaked. i can’t imagine anyone would hack in, but what else could have happened?

still, what can you do? i changed my passwords, backed up everything again, and chalked it up to miscellaneous freakery.

this kind of thing doesn’t happen to people on blogger s igh:

like the cycle of life… only, y’know… porn

by Jen at 8:52 pm on 7.06.2007 | 4 Comments

so as i was skimming through the never ending list of porn-related search terms leading to my blog, i found this:

goldfish up my ass

so, insatiably curious as to *how on god’s green earth* that lead to my site, i checked.

turns out, google has indexed the comments on this page of mine.

it appears i am currently the number 3 result of that particular search string (out of only five, mind you, but still, good enough to qualify for a bronze medal). and now, having referenced “goldfish up my ass” again, i’m sure i’ll shoot straight to number one. roll

my mom would be so proud!

i’ve been fascinated by these images for several weeks now – i keep returning to them over and over again, drawn to their power. they are stunning. arresting. inspiring. in particular, the world water day essay, the chernobyl essay, the steve mccurry essay, and the guantanamo essay.

sometimes you just need to share some beauty.

you can also check them out via slate’s featured photos.

staff shortage

nothing pisses me off more in the mornings than hearing there are delays on the tube due to the all-too-frequent “staff shortage”.

in what kind of parallel universe is this an acceptable excuse?! they might as well say, “our staff (who already get 35 days holiday a year) are too lazy to bother showing up for work, and we’re too incompetent to have a backup coverage plan to make sure we can operate a service, so even though you’re paying the same full fare, tough tittie for you if *you’re* actually expected to show up to *work*.”

it’s beyond infuriating.

so last.fm apparently thinks my musical taste most closely matches that of several 19 year olds, with names like “d romeo” and “theboredone”. seriously, like 200 of the people they suggest as my “neighbours” are 19.

cause for celebration? or head-in-the-oven? you be the judge.

the sad thing is, i don’t know if that means i’m really edgy, or they’re just listening to really old farty music. i suspect the latter. and i’m sooo not putting legwarmers back on.

Oh my life. my cat plays fetch. up until now he’s played “football”, batting his little ping-pong ball around. and now, he brings the ball to j to throw. in his mouth, like a dog.

he’s officially a freak.

the mystery-that-is-google never fails to amaze me.

and no, i did not misspell “mannequines” anywhere in my blog that i can find.

…or, for that matter, “round asses”

some days i’m reminded of why i love where i live. i love living in a majority non-white, non-christian neighbourhood. i love walking down the high street to the smell of spices. i love the markets full of interesting vegetables, the vibrant clothing, the different languages. i love the quiet side streets full of families and gardens. i love the shops selling exotic teas and sweets and music.

i feel at home here in a community of immigrants.

other people may knock it – but i wouldn’t live in any other part of london.

Go to Google.com

Click on “Maps”

Click on “get Directions”

From: London, England

To: New York, New York

Click “search”

and why on earth would someone need to cross the channel first? though i shouldn’t complain, since according to these directions, i touch land at long wharf, boston and can stop-off to visit the family after my brisk ocean dip!

(bit of an obvious one, today’s song, but it had to be done!)

life is good

it’s a friday morning. i woke up at the leisurely hour of 9:00, and am sitting here nursing a giant mug of strong, sweet coffee, getting ready to dive into a book. the flat is flooded with sunlight, the cat is bathing in a small pool of it on the floor, a tantalisingly warm breeze floats through the open window, soaring, swelling strains of opera in the background… and a four day weekend stretching out in front of me.

it doesn’t get any better than this.
